Lib Dem call to oppose ignored

Proposals that could downgrade Accident and Emergency at Broomfield Hospital have been backed by Conservatives on Essex County Council.

At the December meeting of Essex County Council the Liberal Democrat Opposition asked the Council to oppose these plans but the Tories voted the move down. Under the NHS proposals trauma patients from Chelmsford and Mid Essex could be taken all the way to Basildon hospital instead of Broomfield.

Essex County Council has spent £1,234,180 compensating motorists for damage caused by potholes since 2012, figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats have revealed.
Nationally a total of £12 million has been paid out over the last four years across the country, with an average payment per person of £650.
The figures were uncovered by Freedom of Information requests to 500 councils by the Liberal Democrats.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Stephen Robinson (Chelmsford North) said: "This is a lose-lose situation for everyone, whether they are motorists, councils or taxpayers.
"Thousands of pounds are now being spent on pay-outs that could have been invested instead in fixing our roads.
"This is a symptom of the short-termism taken to infrastructure investment by our Conservative-run Council and Government.
"Roads should be fixed quickly so this compensation does not have to be paid out in the first place."

Conservatives Fail To Deal With NHS Blackhole

This week's autumn statement shows a Brexit blackhole at the centre of government finance. Parliament has heard that hundreds of billions will be taken out of the economy just when we need it most.

Liberal Democrats across our area and the country have been pushing the government to put their money where their mouth is - with an immediate £4 billion cash injection to stop the impending winter NHS funding crisis.

Braintree & Witham Liberal Democrats were saddened to learn of the the closure of Witham firm Climate Energy, and the resulting loss of jobs of its 85 staff.

During the last Coalition Government, the Liberal Democrats ensured that alternative energy projects were encouraged and developed through the use of subsidies. However, now the Conservatives are on their own, they have abolished this invaluable support causing companies such as Climate Engery- formerly part of a growing sector - to be unable to sustain their business.

The Conservative on Essex Country Council today voted through a pay rise for over 27 of their own Councillors. They rejected a Liberal Democrat amendment that would have instead reduced special responsibility allowances - recommendations which had been made by an independent and impartial panel.

The Conservative figures increased allowances for many Conservative Councillors and reduced those available to Opposition Members, in an undemocratic move, and substituted their own figures instead of those recommended by the impartial review panel.

Essex County Council is being challenged to review its pothole policy, because if a pothole is less than 50mm deep it does not have to be repaired. The Liberal Democrats are putting a motion to the Council meeting on 13th October challenging the Conservative-run authority's policy.
