Barry Fleet's priorities for Witham Southern

April 24, 2017 4:56 PM

Barry Fleet HeadshotBarry Fleet sets out his priorities as Lib Dem candidate for Witham Southern in the County Council Elections:

I have always believed that the Liberal Democrats are by far the most green of the mainstream parties and that is why I am a member, and in addition, I want to see a stronger economy and fairer society in Britain.

I have lived in Witham for over 30 years and have a strong track record of fighting to improve conditions for Witham residents, initially through being a Town Councillor for over 20 years and being Town Mayor twice.

I was Chair of Governors for 18 years at Chipping Hill School at it's original site, and have also been a long standing trustee of Witham Housing Association, providing accommodation for the elderly. Currently, I am a Trustee of the Witham Public Hall Trust, providing a vital entertainment venue for our town. I am also the founder and Chairman of the Witham Tree Group which has led to the planting of 100s of new trees in our town, significantly improving our environment.

If elected for Witham Southern:

  • I will continue to put the interests of our residents ahead of property developers as we need not only new housing but also access to GPs, local shops and pharmacies and safe access to our town and village centres;
  • I am extremely concerned about the fragile state of local social care which needs to be adequately funded and integrated properly with health care and will campaign for this to be addressed;
  • Essex schools are likely to lose millions of pounds of funding, which will only compound the problem of disillusioned teachers leaving the profession. Our schools deserve proper financial support, ideally through the County Council rather than having so-called 'free schools' distorting education provision;
  • I will stand up for our residents including EU citizens, who contribute to our vibrant Witham society, as we will all be concerned about the potential damage to business and jobs through a harmful hard Brexit
