Conservatives award themselves a pay rise defying independent panel recommendations

October 14, 2015 11:54 AM

Money down drainThe Conservative on Essex Country Council today voted through a pay rise for over 27 of their own Councillors. They rejected a Liberal Democrat amendment that would have instead reduced special responsibility allowances - recommendations which had been made by an independent and impartial panel.

The Conservative figures increased allowances for many Conservative Councillors and reduced those available to Opposition Members, in an undemocratic move, and substituted their own figures instead of those recommended by the impartial review panel.

Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Mike Mackrory, moved the Liberal Democrat amendment and said:

"The Conservatives have driven a coach and horses through the recommendations of the Independent Panel, who studied the evidence very closely and produced a well-argued set of figures. The Conservative decision to over-ride the recommendations and award half their group a pay rise will leave most Essex residents with a nasty taste in their mouth."

However after more than two years of arguing, the Council has finally accepted the Liberal Democrats' view that Councillors should not be entitled to free meals at County Hall, funded by the taxpayer.
