Braintree District Council
LOCAL ENVIRONMENT - Residents should have clean and pleasant streets to live in. The Liberal Democrats encourage communities to take a pride in their environment through volunteer action teams to target run down or neglected areas. We believe in small local waste and recycling facilities. We strongly oppose the import of waste by the lorry load from outside the district to the Rivenhall airfield site.
LOCAL ECONOMY - The Liberal Democrats encourage local employment initiatives, providing they do not harm the environment. We also appreciate that local businesses need our support to prosper and grow. Inward investment to the region and improvements in East-West transport routes are key.
LOCAL TRANSPORT - Braintree needs improvements to the accessibility and reliability of the rail service to Witham and London. We also need other public transport options to be more readily available. Further safe cycling and pedestrian routes are needed in and around our town. Community transport helps reduce the social isolation of elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents. Continued funding for this endeavour needs to be assured.
LOCAL PLANNING & HOUSING - The Liberal Democrats believe in planning for a low energy future by sighting housing, amenities and workplaces so as to minimise the need for travel, and by designing efficient buildings that make best use of energy. We recognise that public transport cannot adequately meet all needs and that there must be adequate off street parking.
LOCAL SERVICES - We believe that every area of Braintree should have access to good schools, community hospitals, essential services and leisure facilities. You, as a resident of Braintree, should be able to feel that your council tax is being well spent and delivering value for money. The Liberal Democrats will ensure that Braintree council services are of a high standard and are run efficiently to keep your council tax low.
