Speaking tonight in a House of Commons debate on energy prices, Norwich South MP Simon Wright urged Ministers to continue to increase transparency and competition for consumers.
Responding to the debate for the Liberal Democrats, Mr Wright highlighted his concerns about the massive price differences in energy tariffs particularly for non- internet based accounts.
Following the debate, Mr Wright said:
" Many of my constituents have complained to me about the rising cost of energy, and I share their concerns.
"During the debate, I stressed how important it is that Ministers, Ofgem, and suppliers ensure that consumers are able to get the best deals. One of the concerns I raised was that while it is generally the those people who use price comparison websites and online accounts who get the best deals, for many people who are not internet savvy or connected, these options are not always available.
"According to Ofgem, three in five households say that they have never switched energy supplier. It is vital that the way our energy bills are constructed is made more transparent, and that people are able to more easily compare what they would actually pay under different tariffs. Most people would be more likely to consider switching if this information was clearer."
Mr Wright also pressed for further efforts to improve energy conservation to help bring down energy bills in the longer term. He also highlighted the benefits that the Government's commitment to roll-out smart meters to every home by 2019 will bring, adding that advice must be given to households about their use to achieve the best results.
